Week 6
The theme given to us was "Refugees in Malaysia". Task given was to research about refugees in Malaysia and summarise my findings. Then, we were asked to plan our poster design by thinking of the concept, slogan, call for action and look up for posters as inspirations.
Firstly, we were assigned to look up for 3 poster references. (MOOD BOARD)
SUMMARY :
Intro :
The migration of refugees to Malaysia is largely because of the better economic opportunities while a substantial number of irregular and vulnerable migrants come to Malaysia seeking protection from violence, persecution and violations in their home country. Over the past three decades, systematic and social discrimination against Rohingya, a persecuted Muslim minority from Myanmar, has compelled hundreds of thousands to seek safety in countries such as Malaysia.
Paragraph 1 :
As the refugees do not possess any identification card (ID) or legal status, they constantly living in fear and anxiety. They felt themselves to be outcast, having no access to education and health care services. Refugeed find themselves in an environment where they are being exploited by the local residents. They are charged higher rental and are not paid by employers. The landlords charge them more rentals because they do not trust them. When they work, they get little pay and sometimes employers do not pay them but they cannot argue. Even the local transport operators discriminates them. The refugees were not only bullied and exploited but are being treated as if they had no identity and are trapped within their own comunities. Socially, the refugees' children are deprived of the access to education which is the basic necessity for development and personal growth. In Malaysia, only 20% of the Myanmar refugee children attend structured education projects conducted by UNHCR.
Paragraph 2:
The lack of employment and financial support translate into emotional distress among the refugees. As most of them are asylum seekers since they do not possess any UNHCR identity card, they are being bullied by employers and are unable to seek proper medical treatment. A woman refugee narrated a devastating situation where she found an old asylum seeker who had to work endlessly but did not get much money. He was feeling frustrated because he was unable to help his family and had expressed the desire to die. She also expressed the emotional stress when they are unable to support themselves with their daily neccessities. Material deprivation and symbolic connotation might cause them to feel worthlessness and failure. Even as temporary residents of Kuala Lumpur, the refugees are afraid to look for work for fear of being arrested and detained in immigration detention camp where they will be confronted and brutally handled by immigration and enforcement officers.
Summary :
To elevate these refugees from their present situation, more local communities should volunteer in assisting UNHCR by providing these refugees with improved social services such as health, education and employment. Since language and education are important predictors of successful economic integration, there is an urgent need for more social and non-governmental organizations to assist these refugees in providing better educational environment equipped with basic learning facilities and sufficiently paid staff. Education is seen as an important tool for these refugees children for it is necessary in reinforcing their dreams of resettling in a third country or their homeland in future. To protect and improve the lives of refugees, there should be a common standard dignity and security for all who are on the move regardless of the reasons for their dislocation, status and categories.
